The 2017 report begins with a Foreword and Executive Summary. These are followed by four substantive sections:

  • Volume and Value of the Conference and Meetings Market
  • Dimensions of the Conference and Meetings Market (describing the average number of events per venue, event duration, delegate rates, levels of residential and non-residential business, type of event organisation, the use of PCOs and event agencies, event size, and origins or source of events business)
  • Expectations and Trends (covering venues’ business performance in 2016 and their expectations for 2017, factors influencing buyers and organisers and capital investment programmes by venues)


The report also contains four appendices:


  • Venue Analysis (performance by venue type)
  • Methodology and approach
  • Market insights (contributed by different types of venue)
  • Survey sponsor descriptions.


Among key findings of the 2017 research were:


  • In 2016 there was an estimated £19.4 billion of direct expenditure generated by conference and meeting delegates and organisers in venues and in wider destination spend, a slight increase on 2015 (£19.2 billion)
  • There were an estimated 1.45 million conferences and meetings in the UK in 2016, a significant increase on 2015 (1.34 million)
  • There was an average of 419 events per venue in 2016 (compared with an average of 383 in 2015) although the average event size (67 delegates) was slightly lower
  • The majority of events were held in hotels, followed by unusual/multi-purpose venues
  • The average event duration was 1.6 days. However, most events lasted a day or less
  • The majority of venues indicated that their business performance was up in 2016 compared with 2015, and venues were optimistic about prospects for 2017
